The Winning Underdog

DK’s Journey

From a Rooftop Antenna in Patna to Silicon Valley

An unconventional path through engineering in India, product design in Japan, semiconductor leadership in the United States, and an unfinished search for better ways to connect devices, tools, and people.

The Journey, One Reinvention at a Time

There was no straight line from Patna to Silicon Valley. Each transition required learning a new discipline, a new culture, or a new way of seeing the same engineering problem.

Patna and the First Signal

In 1982, when his family brought home its first television, DK was sent to the rooftop to turn the antenna. The moment a small movement changed the picture below began a lifelong fascination with electronics.

An Unconventional Education

Before IIT (BHU), he had not completed a full academic year of regular classroom schooling. He built his foundation through AMIE, entered IIT through GATE, and earned an M.Tech. in Electronics and Communication Engineering.

Onida, JVC, and Thirteen Years in Japan

Onida became his first formal engineering role. At JVC in Yokohama, he worked as a system design engineer and learned to connect circuits, boards, products, manufacturing, and customer experience as one system.

“An underdog journey is not a straight climb. It is a series of reinventions, each built on what the last one taught you.”

BECOMING UNDERDOG

What the Journey Made Visible

The value of the journey is not that it followed a perfect plan. It is that each stage revealed a wider system: from signals to circuits, products to platforms, and individual ambition to meaningful contribution.

From System Design to Silicon

In 2013, DK moved from Japan to San Jose to manage Intersil’s mass-market power product line. The shift from building finished products to supplying components exposed a recurring gap: customers still had to assemble complete systems from fragmented tools and knowledge.

Building Systems Around Devices

After Renesas acquired Intersil, he built and led a global systems-and-solutions organization spanning Winning Combinations, Lab on the Cloud, Quick-Connect IoT, Quick-Connect Studio, and enterprise PCB-design infrastructure.

The Unfinished Workflow Question

Years spent moving between products, components, tools, and platforms led to the question behind Harvesting the Crown Jewel: why has electronics improved so many individual tools without making the complete design workflow whole?

Writing the Next Chapter

Harvesting the Crown Jewel turns four decades of engineering experience into a history of the unfinished design workflow.

Becoming Underdog is the wider platform for the lessons, people, ideas, and technologies encountered along the way.
